Minutes of meeting held on March 2, 2011
The meeting was opened at 10:17 a.m. by Chairman Sue Sanders
PRESENT: COA members: Diane Balderelli, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble, Jack Reed, and Susan Sanders. Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney, Manager Don Sanders, and Linda Artruc.
ABSENT: Earl Johnson.
MINUTES: Motion by Diane to accept the February 9, 2010, minutes was approved.
REPORTS
OUTREACH WORKER – Debbie Tierney distributed her report. Cpl. Jeff Forcier spoke on February 23rd on senior safety and importance of having the “File of Life” current and handy. Linda Galarneau from GSSSI will speak to us at lunch on March 14th on general nutrition topics as well as about GSSSI meals and their sodium content. Deb reports that she will rewrite our grant application to reflect our commitment to health and wellness. She asked about getting the copyright license so we can show health, wellness, disease and aging videos in place of relying on speakers. There is $150 in Butterworth Funds for each of 20 households. There is a possibility of getting surplus items through sources recommended by HES Principal Lou DiBella.
SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock. In February, 711 contacts were made and 80 seniors were served. 214 attended the Center, 77 attended congregate meals. The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (110), COA meeting (10), blood pressure/AVADA (0), senior tax work off (14), cards & games (56), exercise (38), meetings and other activities (8), stained glass (51), speakers (16), crafts (14), computer (14), veterans’ agent (4), phone calls (85).
SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock - As of February 28, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $4,166.00, the Assessor’s office $136.00, tax collector $356.00, Town Clerk $168.00, and Holland Elementary School $1,244.00. Total YTD is $6,070.00
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Regular programs: Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please. Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday Gentle chair Yoga with Joan Allen from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Small fee per class. Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $15. /month; craft class at 1:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc. Wednesday 10:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Tai Chi from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. with David Masera, small fee per class; Thursday Computer classes at 10:30 a.m. with
Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15-3:00 p.m. Zumba coming in April. Weekdays: Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily. We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work. We have exercise equipment available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No fee. The quilt donated by “The Material Girls” of Holland was won by Chris McCoo. Musician/storyteller John Porcino’s performance was cancelled and will be rescheduled. Monday, 3/14 at noon, Linda Galarneau from GSSSI. March 23rd and 30th at 1:00 p.m. flower pot painting with Linda for your own plant or a gift. On Monday 4/4 Richard Clark with perform “Great Scott/Andrew Carnegie. April 6th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. AVADA hearing clinic. April 18th closed
for Patriot’s Day.
FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer - December report includes: Receipts: GSSSI $630.00 and gifts totaling $350.00. Expenditures: Telephone $67.18, water testing $15.00, exercise class $30.00, building supplies $37.00, trash pickup $53.84, National Grid $83.18, printing/mailing newsletter $148.14, office supplies $212.42, Allstate Fire
Equipment $152.50, Osterman propane $580.75, and salaries $1964.40.
MANAGER: Don Sanders – A dimmer switch in the main room needs replacement. He would like to be able to get an umbrella for our picnic table. Diane reports Jason Monroe from Holland will weld our shaky tables to make them safe. Diane spoke to National Grid and they can install a light on the pole at the end of our driveway. Cost per year would be about $87.00. Motion made by Diane to proceed with the installation of a light fixture at the entrance to our driveway was unanimously approved.
Motion by Diane to accept the above verbal and printed reports was approved by the Council on Aging.

CORRESPONDENCE: Letter sent to Janet Crock and Betty Berniche for their donation of Christmas goodie bags. Letter to the Red Cross is pending.
Motion made by Brad to adjourn the meeting at 10:55 a.m. was approved.
